What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

A lot! I want to become more comfortable with the technical side of Wordpress maintenance. I want to learn how best to engage my audience across several social media platforms. And of course tips on how to achieve work / life / blog balance. I really want to learn how and when to grow my blog into other media (podcasts, books, etc). And of course, I can't wait to meet and learn from other bloggers, established and new.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

From childhood, I always liked to journal and dreamed of becoming a writer. As I got older, I found myself telling & writing stories of my youth and how I walked the line between Caribbean & American culture. Everyone I shared the stories with would say 'You should start a blog!' So I did.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

I'd love to connect with those who blog about the Caribbean or life in the Caribbean diaspora

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

Write posts ahead of time and develop an editorial calendar. I'm still new to this but I know if I wait until inspiration hits me, there will be huge gaps in my posting schedule.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

Hopefully, in 5 years,I'll be blogging full-time. My dream is for my blog to grow to include a podcast, a web-series and several books. Basically, my own mini-media empire. :-)

Attendee Spotlight: Tatiana G. King from Love @ 1st Byte

Screen shot 2013-05-23 at 9.55.11 AM.png

Our Attendee Spotlight is:

Tatiana G. King  who's blog is Love @ 1st Byte

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

BWB is my first experience attending a conference dedicated to bloggers within the Black community. Sharing in the experience of networking and being involved with those that have flourished within the industry (and those just starting) is a key element for my personal growth as a blogger/writer. I am intensely focused in gathering knowledge from other bloggers to build Love @ 1st Byte into a recognizable brand and trusted voice in the tech world.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I have been involved in tech and the Internet for over 15 years to varying degrees. Most recently, as a Twitter user (started in 2008); I've amassed an organic following of people that are engaged and trust my opinion on consumer devices, products and overall tech news. I created Love @ 1st Byte to expand beyond the 140 character limit and showcase enriching coverage of those topics.

In addition, as a Black woman within and highly interested in technology I am still considered an anomaly. I aim to change that viewpoint which is why the start of my blog was extremely important.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

I'm interested in connecting with bloggers from all standpoints; whether with those more technically inclined and well versed in Java, CSS, HTML5, etc., to those more dedicated to design and entertainment; or even bloggers that focus on SEO strategy and branding. I'm obviously also super excited to meet with other bloggers that discuss technology.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

Proofread thoroughly and review EVERYTHING! You may have the most interesting point of view or unique idea, but if you introduce these thoughts in a convoluted or grammatically incorrect manner, the trust formed with the reader is diluted. Quality is King.

Design is just as important as content. If you’re just starting out a blog or looking to spruce up an existing one, look both within and outside your circle for help with site structure. Form a plan of action and look for viable solutions (not everything involves having to use lots of money). Remember that clean and readable formats will always trump sites with poorly designed or non-functional aspects or sites with too many design elements.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

My goal is to assist in the creation of a movement that will change the overall narrative of the Black community’s involvement in the tech space and cultivate a higher mainstream awareness of the varying aspects of technology. I see Love @ 1st Byte as being one of the major catalysts of change to introduce Black bloggers, engineers, startups, and others. In five years, LAFB will be a recognizable and leading source where people readily visit to catch up tech news and opinion, and is considered an expert source

Do you need something from your fellow bloggers to take your blogging to the next level?

First-person perspective and advice on brand development is an essential take-away that I would love to learn from fellow bloggers. It is my hope that while attending BWB I can gain and foster lifelong friendships with like-minded people, as well as find synergies and collaborations with other projects within and round my area of focus

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

I believe I have an intrinsic understanding of how technology fits within, and modifies culture on a variety of levels. I consider myself a technical/creative hybrid that understands the less accessible items like general coding, while having the ability to marry that into creative thought and work out solutions that can be readily understood.

In addition, I consider myself a Word-Smith; I am adept at converting big thoughts into focused narrative. In addition, my level of resourcefulness is on 10. My other areas of expertise include event and show management.

Screen shot 2013-05-23 at 9.49.31 AM.png

Our Attendee Spotlight is:

Mariama Todd who's blog is 40Muse.com

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

I hope to learn how to monetize my blog (to at least, offset my annual hosting expenses!), brand myself and my blog to be seen as as authorities in this space, drive traffic and learn how to engage users. I am blogging while working full-time, so learning how to balance all of this would be helpful.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I have been a media glutton since I was a kid. There was always a copy of Ebony ,Black Enterprise and Essence in our house. As an adult I have worked on the finance side of the media business for the last 15 years. I became frustrated with the lack of content for and acknowledgement of Black women over the age of 35 in traditional media. The lack of acknowledgement from larger media companies and marketers make it seem like Black women either die or don't have money to spend once they hit 35. I know that is not the case! I created a business plan for a print version of 40Muse.com 10 years ago while in graduate school. Print is no longer a financially viable option for a start-up, so I decided to get to the public via a blog instead.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

Women's lifestyle bloggers. I want to include fashion and beauty on my site and need to align with fellow bloggers that specialize in this area.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

1. Be consistent in posting. This is something that I struggle with and am trying to rectify.

2. Social media dashboards such as Hootsuite and Bottlenose help you maintain your sanity!

3. Be selective about the brands and writers that you align your blog with.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

I want 40Muse.com to be a self-sustaining business in 5 years. I want us to be known as the authoritative voice for mature Black women; when someone thinks of older (35+) black women, I want 40Muse.com to immediately come to mind. I would like to see the blog provide live events for women in our demographic and provide research insights for marketers and journalists.

Do you need something from your fellow bloggers to take your blogging to the next level?

I need help distinguishing between my voice, and that of the blog. I want to be known as the "go to" resource for the mature Black woman. How can I make that happen?

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

My professional background is in finance within the media industry. I'm damned good at analysis and financial planning. If you have a business plan that needs to be reviewed, I'm your person.

Our Attendee Spotlight is:

Tyece Wilkins who's blog is Twenties Unscripted.

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

I hope to meet new bloggers and writers so I can continue to expand the network of people who keep me inspired and insatiable

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I started blogging in the winter of 2009 because I worked boring shifts at the front desk of a dorm hall and I needed something to do. That and I knew I had something to say. Four years later, I still have something to say. What I have to say has morphed with time (as it should). But, I have always found writing to be the medium I am most comfortable using and a blog provided a convenient way to use that medium.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

I am definitely interested in connecting with bloggers who are also looking to publish books. I consider myself a writer first and a blogger second.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

1) Listen and network. I attended last year's BWB Conference with just a smile, a few last minute business cards, and a blog that was still on Tumblr. I remember emailing Melinda Emerson (aka Small Biz Lady) after to follow up and the first thing she said was, "Get that blog onto Wordpress ASAP." It was the best advice to date I have gotten for my blog. Investing in my own dot com has already helped expose my blog to a broader audience.

2) Invest in yourself. That just echoes the lessons I received from Melinda. Invest in your product and your education about it. And, do not just invest money (conferences, web hosting, books, coaching sessions, etc.) but invest time. Take the time to reread your work or that pitch email or the appropriate spelling of someone's Twitter handle. Take the time to let the writing hit you in a way that you produce something great and not just something to fill a page.

3) Consistency and content. Sometimes bloggers put too much emphasis on the readers and forget that you as the content owner are therefore responsible for driving traffic. And, it's impossible to drive traffic if the content isn't consistent or good. It's really that simple. People will not come back if they don't see anything new and they certainly won't come back if they don't see anything that's done well.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

Myself: alive, happy, working on the second book and getting ready for "Thirties Unscripted."

The blog: still kickin' and contributing to the content in the second book.

Do you need something from your fellow bloggers to take your blogging to the next level?

Encouragement! The blogosphere is mammoth but I think we can all carve out our own niche. I get discouraged by some of the blogging vets who have really capitalized on this space and found success, but then I remember there's a place for all of us in this big, bad microcosm.

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

My only "expertise" is really in writing and editing. And, I'm still a work in progress regarding those two things! But, without good content and an eye for detail, a lot of blogs will die easily. I am certainly happy to collaborate with other writers, brainstorm and edit!

I'd like to meet and network with other bloggers. I'm always looking for more ways to connect with people who have the same passion that I do. I think these conferences are great ways to meet new people and share experiences, even connect and build bridges for the future.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I wanted to be read. I wanted my voice to be heard. I needed an outlet to get my thoughts and feelings out. I wanted to share my experiences with the world and help others.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

1. Remain authentically you

2. Don't ever sell out

3. Do what you enjoy

4. Reach out to others; sell yourself well

Eh, my blog is no longer my go-to place because of all of the other writing opportunities I have. I can see it transforming more into a centralized website for all of my endeavors.

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

Yes. I've gone from blogger to columnist, editor, and radio show host. I can offer tips/advice on how to expand beyond your blog, follow your dreams, and make money from writing. I can offer advice about connecting personality with writing and engaging an audience.

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

I hope to experience the sense of family from a community of folks that look like me and are following their passion. Hearing tips, tricks, and war stories are awesome - especially over drinks!

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I saw a void of science being communicated to every day people, especially minorities.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

I'd love to meet education bloggers - especially science, math, or tech.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

My number one tip is to blog consistently. Whether it's daily or a few times a week, let the readers know when they can expect content. Number two is put your email subscription and social media info in a prominent place on your blog.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

I'd love to be blogging full time in 5 years, and be connected with major science publications that are looking to reach my audience.

Do you need something from your fellow bloggers to take your blogging to the next level?

I need to figure out how to frame my content so that people are more willing to share on social networks.

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

I've successfully balanced a blog and a podcast which serve two different but sometimes overlapping audiences. It can be quite a challenge and I can give tips on how this can be done.

I've also successfully managed relationships with companies that send me products to review and I speak about then without losing the voice of my blog.

Our Attendee Spotlight is:

Eva Greene-Wilson who's blog is SocaMom.com...because Motherhood is CAH-NEE-VAL!

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

Last year I had such an amazing experience in Philadelphia, that I just hope to experience that plus some! I would love to meet new bloggers and speakers, and reconnect with those that I met at Blogging While Brown last year. I also hope that the sessions will spark some new ideas to make my blog even better for my readers.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

Once I became a parent, and started meeting other parents, I realized that my style of parenting was different because I was brought up in a Caribbean household. I decided to start this blog to share resources for parents with roots in the Caribbean who are raising their children outside of the West Indies. I believe that giving children and parents access to their roots truly empowers and inspires them.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

I am interested in meeting all types of bloggers at Blogging While Brown this year. I went last year with no profile of the type of blogger I'd be looking to connect with in mind, and met some amazing people, some of whom I have brunch with every month now! You just never know who you'll meet - that's part of the adventure.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

My top blogging tip for other bloggers is to check the demographics of your visitors, and check it often. Knowing your audience is key to attracting sponsors, cultivating partnerships, and creating content that speaks your mind and speaks to your readers as well.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

In the next five years, I hope to be the first place that parents go to find resources to help them connect their children to Caribbean culture and history. For parents who don't know where to start when introducing their Caribbean roots to their children, the games and coloring sheets have been really helpful.

Do you need something from your fellow bloggers to take your blogging to the next level?

To take my blogging to the next level, I just need my fellow bloggers to take a moment to remember me, and I'll try my best to do the same. When someone brings up parenting, culture, homeschooling, or the Caribbean (or all of the above), I would want my fellow bloggers to mention to them that they know a blogger who shares information on those subjects, and then direct them to my blog.

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

I'm a huge "do it yourself" person when it comes to my blog. I am the graphic designer, the programmer (when the husband is busy), the photographer, the videographer, the recruiter, the editor, the everything. I can share with bloggers tools, tips, and tricks that have worked for me, and saved me time, energy, and money, without compromising quality.

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

I hope to engage in more networking opportunities, expand my social media toolbox and have a little fun.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I was frustrated answering the same questions from people. I thought a blog would be perfect to house and share all the information I know about technology.

Are there specific types of bloggers you are interested in connecting with at the conference?

I'm interested in connecting with technology and STEM education bloggers.

What are your top blogging tips for other bloggers?

Be consistent - Write frequently enough that your audience continues to come back to blog.

Content is queen/king - Good content is key with so many bloggers you have to offer quality content.

Keep your layout clean and responsive

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

In five years, the goal for my blog is to be a resources for small businesses and non profits when establishing or updating their online presence as well as seeking tips for technology to improve their productivity in their personal or professional life.

In five years I hope that blogging is a natural part of my day and that people are asking me to blog for them because I'm an expert in establishing a solid online presence with accountable ROI (Return on Investment).

Do you need something from your fellow bloggers to take your blogging to the next level?

Yes, more information about branding and engaging my audience. I'm an introvert and would love to be break out my shell online because I love technolgy and sharing information. I've been following @drgoddess and @smallbizlady for tips but I need more.

Do you have something to offer bloggers to help them take their blogging to the next level?

I'm adept in technology infrastructure, assisting people an organization's with developing a stable online presence platform. I can assist people in securing domain names, web-hosting services, implementing an email at their domain, set-up social networks and blogs. I'm a HootSuite Certified professional.

Your 2013 Panel Descriptions

Stop Thinking Like a Blogger and Think Like a Business!

This session focuses on:

Inspiring bloggers to think bigger.

  • Breaking down misconceptions about turning your blog into a business
  • Drawing contrast between how most bloggers think vs. how successful business owners think
  • Providing action Items on how bloggers in attendance can create more customers and make more money

Online Energy, Offline Synergy: How Creating Content Online Can Create Financial Opportunities Offline

This panel will discuss ways in which your blog can generate opportunities that are profitable outside of the traditional ad revenue model. So many people go into blogging thinking once they get a loyal following the advertisers will come a ʻknocking. Iʼm one of those bloggers and I still havenʼt made more than $25 through advertising on my blog and Iʼve been blogging regularly for over 5 years and get almost 10,000 hits a month. I have, however, as a direct result of the content on my blog, been able to secure a number of deals offline which have been quite substantive including speaking engagements, magazine features, and a great social media consulting gig for a major NYC museum. Blogging isnʼt all about the ad dollars as a matter of fact Jodie and I will

tell you that itʼs not really about the ad dollars at all. Itʼs about flipping your online presence to make money off line in other creative synergistic mediums.

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1. If you don't have advertising on your blog can your blog still be a profitable platform?

2. What kinds of professional opportunities can a blog create for a blogger?

3. What are the three things your blog/ social media platform needs in order to turn data into dollars?

4. How do you use your blog's popularity and buzz to secure deals with magazine editors, consumers, book publishers, etc? What do these deals look like?

5. What's the key to making YouTube videos that go viral and create sales for

products?

When Keeping It Real Goes Real Wrong!

Imagine a place where creative thought trumps law and your ability to have an opinion supersedes that of precedence and slander. Sounds like an amazing world, huh? The fact is, it doesn't exist, and sometimes bloggers end up on the short end of stick.

Enter, lawyer. A lawyer that has built a platform on education creative thinkers and brands on how to maintain integrity, produce authentic opinion and to protect themselves. The reality of it is, laws are changing. The "win/loose" , "right/wrong", "I say what I want to say" era is out the door and bloggers need to arm themselves on what it takes to make it in this business, and to win.

In one session we will get to the root of it all - no fluff here. We will discuss lawsuits, deformation, protecting your content, and more. No question will be to raw and I will give you the tips the clients usually pay for.

The reality of it is, a candid conversation with an informed lawyer can mean the difference between suing and being sued. Blogging is a business and businesses create brands. It's the steps that you take today that can leave you to focus on what you're meant to do - and that's blogging. So let me help you get back to focusing on what matters. After all, you know what they say in the blogger world.. "You're only as good as your last post".

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1. What is defamation, what does it have to do with blogging and why even I need to fact check?

2. What's the 411 on endorsements and product reviews and what will definitely get you sued?

3. Why protecting content is important and why other people can sometimes steal your stuff?

4. Why the fine print matters and what the advertiser doesn't want to tell you, but I will.

5. How your big mouth can get you in trouble if you are not careful?

Beyond Facebook & Twitter: Using Google Plus, Pinterest and Instagram to maximize pageviews & ad sales

Many bloggers, small businesses and new websites are nervous about exploring new social media platforms. Many will place a Facebook or Twitter account link on their sites and engage audiences and customers that way only. However, there is more benefits in being a "first adopter" in other platforms that are widely becoming more popular: Pinterest, Google Plus and Instagram.

The benefits of doing so is they become the first in their area or market to establish a brand presence and until the larger outfits come aboard (after going up the ladder for approval).

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1. What are the benefits and negatives of each of these platforms?

2. Who are doing good jobs and what are they doing? Can your site replicate that model?

3. What are the time constraints involved with adding more social media platforms to your already strained plate?

4. Can I have a step by step primer on how to incorporate these new platforms?

5. Do these platforms reach different markets or audiences than are on Facebook or Twitter?

Blogging for the love of the blog

1.) Strategies for staying motivated to blog regularly or in the face of criticism from family, friends, colleagues that blogging that doesnʼt generate income is a waste of time.

Hint: The first (and only) person you have to convince that blogging is worthwhile is yourself.

2.) Tips for blogging for the love of it that can lead to compensation and to other social and traditional media opportunities.

3.) Tips for finding your tribe of like-minded bloggers and readers, to form a support network, not an echo chamber.

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1. What is the difference (is there a difference) between a writer, a blogger and an author?

2. What do I do if no one is reading my blog? How do I stay motivated?

3. How do I stay true to the initial intent of my blog when only certain topics are popular?

4. What should I (or even should I) advertise on my blog?

5. How do I build a community of faithful readers?

Security, Privacy and Safety Tips for your Wordpress Blog

This presentation will discuss basic security configurations and setting Wordpress bloggers should implement to ensure the security, privacy and safety of their blog site using Wordpress. The discuss will discuss the common attacks and how to protect and recover from them. Lastly, a discuss on tools and plug-in to help protect your blog will be conducted. To conclude with an open discussion.

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1.The nature of Wordpress and why it is vulnerable to attacks?

2.What configurations you can use to secure your Wordpress blog?

3.What plug-ins you can use to secure your Wordpress blog?

4.The results of being hacked?

5.Where to get help if this goes really bad?

10 Ways to Turn Your Blog Writing from Basic to Brilliant

Starting a blog is free and easy. Itʼs a terrific venue for someone with a passion or a strong expertise or something important to say. But put all that together and you still donʼt have a great blog until youʼre producing stellar, compelling blog posts—posts that captivate people and make them followers. A lot of people have the passion, the expertise, the “something important” part down.

Theyʼve got terrific information to share, but the product theyʼre producing isnʼt going to get picked up for season two, if you will. This quick session, taught by a former Essence editor turned journalism professor—will give you easy-to-remember, easy-touse pointers for making your writing more polished, more compelling, more real. Great content is still the best way to impress potential funders, excite advertisers and keep our readers coming back.

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

Cross-border Conundrums: Being An International Black Blogger

As a Black Canadian blogger, I feel that it would be important to highlight the particular issues that international Black bloggers face. Differing acceptances and expressions of race and ethnicity, varying populations of Black readers, intricacies of working with brands and bloggers based in the US, and engaging readers that may not be located in your home country are all areas that I have found to be quite interesting/challenging as a Black blogger. For instance, I have learned to navigate engaging my readers who are primarily American, even though I am based in Toronto. Also, working with brands based in the US has required me to utilize different tactics than American bloggers may

use. Though this is a particular niche, I feel it is worthwhile to highlight these things in order to facilitate better communication with Black American bloggers and brands, and also to show what Black bloggers outside of the US are doing and experiencing. I would be speaking from a primarily Black Canadian perspective, but would include perspectives of other international hubs as well.

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1. What are the challenges of being a non-American Black blogger?

2. How can international Black bloggers engage readers that may not be based in their

home country? How can they engage more readers in their home country?

3. How can (or should) international bloggers work with American brands?

4. How do varying differences in race relations affect non-American Black bloggers?

5. How can American and non-American Black bloggers work together?

Diversity: Unpacking the Supply and Demand Side of Diversity

I have a mantra about diversity: If you want to achieve diversity...in your work force, speaking roster, audience, etc., you need to:

1. Value it

2. Prioritize it

3. Ask for help to achieve it

Be the Demand.

But the other side of this equation is for all of us who represent diversity. We need to:

1. Value our worth so much that the word token becomes meaningless

2. Prioritize being the change so much that we put ourselves out there. Over and over.

3. Offer help...by bringing others along with us, or recommending others in our place.

BlogHer sets measurable goals for diversity, and the truth is that it's *not that hard*. So let's talk about the decidedly *not* rocket science of getting more diverse perspectives.

5 Questions This Session Will Answer:

1. What is the data about the value of diverse perspectives?

2. What are some of the common excuses for lack of diversity, and why are they mythical?

3. What is BlogHer's methodology to find and secure diverse talent for its initiatives?

4. What should you do if you're given an opportunity because you will bring diversity to the table?

5. Why is it as important to feature "new" voices as it is "diverse" voices?

Attendee Spotlight: Sarah L. Webb from S.L. Writes Courageous Content

Screen shot 2013-04-30 at 10.54.28 AM.png

Our Attendee Spotlight is:

Sarah L. Webb who's blog is S.L. Writes Courageous Content

What do you hope to experience at BWB 2013?

I hope to learn how to run my blog like a business and brand myself as a writer. I’m also looking forward to experiencing the fellowship of other bloggers, particularly bloggers of color. It’s my hope that I leave the conference with a lot of new friends and collaborators.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

When I started my blog, I was also teaching high school full time. The blog was a way for me to reclaim my identity as a writer, because I had been so consumed with education. After writing a few posts, reading a lot of material about how to blog, and getting feedback from readers, I realized that this medium of blogging could change the world, and was actually already changing the world. It was the platform I’d been waiting for most of my life to connect with people and help them by way of my writing and stories.

Where do you see you and your blog in 5 years?

In five years, I want S. L. Writes to be a job creator. I want to be able to support a small team of passionate writers and techies to help me cultivate courage around the world.

I’d also like SLW to be the central hub of my professional career, including books, speaking engagements, freelance work, etc.

What are your Top blogging Tips?

My top tip is to *love* blogging. Love the people you blog for and blog with. Love it with your whole heart, holding nothing back. Be open, authentic, transparent, and daring!

This is Sarah Webb's First BWB! Welcome!
